NaNoWriMo 2017: In-Progress Playlist and Snippets

For starters, sorry for no posts last week. I’d expected to get a few up but clearly, that didn’t happen.

Anyway, NaNoWriMo is over in around three days. I’m both happy and sad. Happy because I can go back to my standard 500 words a day without fear of falling behind and because it means I can bust it with Lady Gwen (and by the way, I’m hoping to reveal the cover here pretty soon). But I’m sad because I’ll probably be slowing down with this project to work on Lady Gwen. Writers have problems.

If you missed my previous NaNo posts, here they are:

NaNoWriMo 2017: My Novel’s Characters, Part 2

For today, I’ll be sharing the playlist I’ve created, which I’m still adding to periodically. It’s a mix of film scores, French songs, and English songs (and after two straight years of mostly French music, finding English music that I know the words to is much harder than I thought). Here’s the playlist if you’d like to give it a listen.

Now for some snippets! I’ve never shared snippets of my writing before, so this is kinda scary, especially with it being from a rough draft. But without further adieu….

She looks like she might laugh before she finally answers. “You want to draw me?”

“If you don’t want me to, that’s fine, just tell me. But I’ve been thinking you’d be an interesting drawing since, well, the day I met you.” It’s honest. I have wanted to draw her since that day in the gallery, when I lingered for what was probably too long on her portrait.

Silence fills the room as he looks at me, his expression going from shock to fear to regret.

“Amira…” he whispers, coming close to me.

“Don’t apologize. It’s my fault as much as it’s yours.”

I offer him the slender silver handle of a throwing knife. “Would you care to try?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “Not today.”

“You don’t know how.” For why else would he refuse?

He smirks. “Of course I know how, Amira Uverennost. Perhaps I just do not wish to show you my skill.”

So what do you think? Let me know in the comments! Have you shared any snippets of your writing? I’d love to read them!

  1. I see you have some good ‘ol hans zimmer on there.
Look up “the oh hellos” on spotify or wherever you get your music.
They are seriously good, super relaxing, and they sing about a lot of meaningful things.
If I were you I would get their newest album “Dear Wormwood”. It was inspired by CS lewis’ writings.

  2. I hope you don’t mind if I share the snippet from the book i’m writing here.
This is the roughest of roughest of roughest of drafts, in no way mean’t to be close to a finished product.
Additionally, I have to use the word “he” or “his” a lot when talking about these characters, because neither of them have been named yet. Any suggestions for better synonyms?

“Awakened. Something was not right, the hairs on his neck were straight as needles and he could sense someone, or something, watching him. Springing out of his bed and onto his feet, he looked at the forest with scrutiny, a sharp twang resonated in the air, an arrow leapt from a bow aimed directly at his rib cage. He catches it in mid air, only inches away from his chest. Surprised at himself, he looks at the dart he has apparently caught. While at the same time, forgetting the perilousness of the situation. Another bolt skims the top of his shoulder, ripping a hole the size of a thumb into his muscle.
Crying out in pain, adrenalized anger surges through his body and pushes him to look for his assailant. He locates him, a faint scent of beard oil and whisky. The tables are turned, the hunter has now become the hunted. The attacker is a hundred yards away in a tree, around twelve feet of the ground and notching another arrow. He starts sprinting towards the tree gaining momentum by the second, the bolt comes flying at him, he easily dodges the arrow and continues to run as the assailant hops out of the tree to flee. He jumps on top of him, pulling him by the shoulder and slams him down on the ground face first. Pulling away the bow, he aims a punch at the aggressors gut but is surprised to find him catch his hand and twist it away, jabbing at him with a hunting knife.
He pushes away and rolls, regaining his feet and kicking the hunter on the chest. The man’s knife falls out of his hands and the wind is knocked out if him as he struggles to catch his breath. He takes the advantage, and knocks the hunter out with a blow to the head, he has been overpowered.”

    1. Very nice!
For names, baby naming websites are a writer’s best friend. It also helps if you having a meaning for the name in mind; you can just search “names that mean blank” and you should get some good ones. For fantasy, Seventh Sanctum and Springhole.net are absolutely amazing name generators.

      1. Thanks! I actually meant in a grammar context, how could I replace the “he” or “his” with another impersonal word. There is a name for the dude, but currently his mind has been wiped, thats why I’m using “he” a lot.
